If you've never booked a mobile groomer before, the process can feel like a black box. Someone shows up in a van, takes your dog inside, and comes back out an hour or two later with a cleaner, fluffier dog. Here's what's actually happening in between.
Arrival and Check-In
The groomer parks in your driveway, introduces themselves, and usually takes a few minutes to say hello to your dog before anything else happens. This is when they'll check in about your dog's coat condition, any health concerns, and the style you want. It's also your chance to bring up anything specific. Our guide on preparing for your first appointment covers what to have ready.
The Bath
Most mobile grooming vans carry their own heated water supply and a tub or bathing station built into the vehicle. Your dog is bathed with shampoo chosen for their coat and skin type, then rinsed thoroughly. For dogs with matted or heavily tangled coats, the groomer may need to address that before the bath rather than after, since water tightens mats.
Drying and Brushing
A high-velocity dryer blows most of the water out of the coat, and the groomer brushes out tangles and loose hair as they go. For shedding breeds, this is where a de-shedding treatment makes the biggest difference, since most of the loose undercoat comes out during the dry-and-brush stage.
The Haircut and Finishing Touches
- Clipping or scissoring to the style you agreed on at check-in
- A nail trim or grind, plus any ear cleaning or sanitary trim included in your package
- Any add-ons you booked, like teeth brushing
- A final brush-out and, if you'd like, a finishing spray or bandana
Wrap-Up and Rebooking
Before leaving, a good groomer will walk you through anything they noticed, like skin irritation, a lump, or coat problems worth watching, and suggest a rebooking interval. Our guide on choosing a trustworthy mobile groomer covers what a good visit should look like from start to finish.
