Goldendoodles, Labradoodles, Bernedoodles, and other poodle mixes have exploded in popularity across North Carolina, and for good reason. But a lot of new doodle owners groom them the same way they would a Golden Retriever or a Lab, and that's exactly how a manageable curl turns into a solid mat within a few weeks.
Why Doodle Coats Are Fundamentally Different
Most dogs shed on a cycle: loose undercoat works its way out and falls away, which is what makes de-shedding tools effective on breeds covered in our guide to double-coated dogs. Poodle-mix coats behave more like human hair. They grow continuously and rarely fall out on their own, which sounds convenient until you realize it means loose hair has nowhere to go except tangling into the curl around it.
How Often Doodles Actually Need Grooming
- A full haircut every 6-8 weeks, regardless of how the coat looks day to day. Waiting until it "needs" a cut usually means it's already matting underneath
- Brushing several times a week at minimum, more for longer or wavier coats. See our breed-by-breed grooming frequency guide for how doodles compare to other coat types
- Extra attention behind the ears, under the collar, in the armpits, and around the tail base, the same friction points that cause trouble on any coat, but faster on a doodle
Preventing the Matting Doodles Are Famous For
Doodle coats need to be brushed all the way down to the skin, not just on the surface. A brush that glides through the top layer while a dense mat forms underneath is one of the most common reasons doodle owners get blindsided by a shave-down recommendation. If it's already gotten away from you, our guide on why groomers sometimes have to shave a matted coat down explains why that's a safety call, not a shortcut.
Choosing a Cut That's Easier to Maintain
A shorter "puppy cut" or "teddy bear trim" sheds far less maintenance burden onto you between visits than growing out a longer, fluffier coat. If daily brushing isn't realistic for your schedule, ask your groomer for a shorter length at each Full Groom. It won't eliminate brushing entirely, but it buys you more room for error before a tangle becomes a mat.
